Harmonizing a Melody Using the Natural Minor - Music Composition
Join us and learn how to harmonize a melody using the natural minor. We start by constructing the scale and the chords in D natural minor, before going on to observe the harmonization of a melody in D natural minor. We consider the nature of each chord in D natural minor as major, minor and diminished. We then move on to consider a possible harmonisation of a melody in D natural minor, including the use of extended chords and suspensions / sus chords.

Using Schemas to Compose Music - Music Composition
Просмотров 12 тыс.19 часов назад
During the 18th century particular harmonic progressions were devised known as Schemas. The various Schemas offered composers melodic and chord progressions that were useful patterns for opening or closing a piece of music or for modulating, for example. We explore examples of Schemas during this video that offer ongoing opportunities for tonal composers today. ⬇️Download the files drive.google...

How would one write chords in a pentatonic scale? Is it like the diatonic scales, where one uses the third and fifth intervals above the root note, or are chords in the pentatonic scale built differently?

    • @MusicMattersGB

You would use any chord that can be constructed within the pentatonic scale.

Always great and comprehensive classic material. It's a pure joy to be a guest on your channel. The example with the mediant leading to the interrupted cadence and then implying the subtonic is excellent. The suspension at the end is a really good practice to preserve the seamless chord flow. Yet another great and inspiring video! It’s interesting how you can think of modulations from a melodic perspective. You would still have the chords in mind, I guess, but once you think of it e.g. as a sequence, it immediately makes sense melodically and you end up with something purposeful and consistent.

If I were to listen to the melody without harmony, I would answer the question 'What key is it?' as G major. Most likely, I would also harmonize the melody in G major. However, the absence of the 6th and 7th degrees allows us the opportunity to harmonize it in minor, I understand. So, if this melody were presented to me already harmonized in minor(without #6 or #7) and I were asked about the key, my answer would still be G major. I would perceive the chord degrees in your video minor harmonization as vi-vi-vii-vi-ii-III-vi. It's a complete paradox. Can you help? Please... Kind Regards.
